While scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed one day, I spotted a post that one of my Facebook friends had posted. She was asking for people’s opinions on the Facebook group “White Nonsense Roundup”. As the name was unfamiliar to me, I decided to check them out and see what they were all about.
Created by whites, White Nonsense Roundup (WNR) seeks to address our “inherently racist society” and support people of color by standing up against racists in families, workspaces, and communities. They believe that it is their job to round up authors, speakers, contacts and even relatives who are adding to structural racism and affecting people of color. They provide resources for people of color including links, videos, anti-racist images, essays, and voices. These resources are available for anyone to use for a “DIY white nonsense roundup” or a team member to support a person of color.
“If you are a Person of Color (POC), you have enough on your plate! It’s not your job to educate white people about privilege, racism, and what’s really going on in the world.” If you’re a person of color and experiencing any racial problems, simply tag a team member, sit back, relax, and watch as a WNR defends you. The group is open to suggestions and welcome feedback. They are happy to assist any person of color!
First, and this is very important so please read carefully: I do not claim to know what it is like to live as a person of color. I am not saying that you are not at a disadvantage. However, we all have different struggles and are at disadvantages in one way or another, you are not the only race with struggles. Also, you do not know me. So, likewise, you cannot tell me that I am privileged when you don’t know anything about me. You cannot tell me that I am personally benefiting from white privilege when you don’t know a single thing about my life or my struggles. It works both ways.
I think it’s great that this support group is trying to control all the hate and negativity that has been going on Facebook. But the fact that they assume that only white people are racist? That bothers me. They would consider it racist if we had a Black Nonsense Roundup group. I wonder how they would respond to all the people of color who have cursed me out, called me names or told me that I was uneducated, all because I respectfully spoke my mind on my own page. Would they stop the bullying or let it continue?
There is no reverse racism because racism includes it all. The Oxford Dictionaries defines racism as “Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.” That means that any race can be racist not just whites. The dictionary is like our constitution for words. We cannot change the definitions to suit our needs. We use the dictionary to give our words meaning like we use the constitution to specify the powers of the government. If we changed every definition we didn’t like we would be moving towards more moral relativity.
