In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jennifer Wertz worked for her local Circle K gas station. She was working alone when 23-year-old armed Ferron Mendez entered the store with the intent to rob it. According to Jennifer, Ferron pointed his gun at Jennifer and demanded money. This action led Jennifer to take out her own gun and shoot him in the chest.
‘Robberies have been going on like this for the past few weeks’
Jennifer said that she kept the gun on hand because she never felt safe working alone. She said that her employer had done very little to ensure her safety. “Robberies have been going on like this for the past few weeks,” Wertz commented. “They have done nothing to protect me. And I felt the need to protect myself.”
Jennifer was fired due to Since Circle K’s no gun policy
Since Circle K gas station has a no gun policy, Jennifer was first suspended for two weeks before being terminated, despite having stopped the robbery. Jennifer was upset by the news especially since she was just defending herself. “We are not to chase,” she said, commenting on the store’s policy toward robbery suspects. “We are not to provoke. We are not to do anything. We just stand there and give them what they want and they leave. What if he would have come in and just shot me just because I wasn’t behind the counter?” Suspect Ferron Mendez was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Now, Jennifer is struggling to support her three small children. Knowing that her daughter would not ask for help, Jennifer’s mother Setup a GoFundMe page. On the page, Jennifer’s mother explains the situation and asks for help There is a picture of her three children who are 8, 6 and 2. The page has received an overwhelming amount of support including comments, shares, and donations. Jennifer’s mother has a starting goal of $20,000 and as of last night (Tuesday), half of that has been raised.
